From Buenos Aires’ pretty Recoleta neighbourhood, MIO Buenos Aires strikes a stylish pose amidst the Parisien-style townhouses, former palaces and high-end designer boutiques. As soon as you pass through its mighty oak door, there’s a strong sense of place defined by Argentina’s wine culture. This doesn’t come as a surprise once you find out the hotel is the brainchild of the highly respected wine-producing Catena family, especially known for their pioneering high-altitude Malbec. Therefore, MIO is awash with wine-inspired design, dining and wellness experiences; even the lofty French oak front door is a wonderful example of upcycled wine barrels.
In essence, this is a boutique hotel with just 29 bedrooms and suites. All are spacious, polished to perfection and modern in sensibility. Some boast striking, hand-carved wooden bathtubs and the two-level Duplex leads up to a private terrace with great city views. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit, just-baked pastries, a cheese board, cereals, eggs and cooked options but as the day goes on, wine takes centre stage. Chiefly at The Verdot Wine Bar, which opens at 12.30pm, whilst Rufino Argentino serves evening sharing plates that showcase classic Argentine favourites with a contemporary flair.
